Contemporary garden inspired by Japanese influences
Location London, UK
A 7.5-acre garden in North London, draws on Japanese principles of landscape abstraction and reinterpretation. Rather than literal reference, the design translates the surrounding English field pattern into a composed, rhythmic landscape – beech, yew, hawthorn and fieldmaple forms punctuate the landscape, while a chequerboard of grasses and perennials reflects the structure of open fields, interwoven with grass paths.
Framed by expansive picture windows, the garden unfolds as a series of carefully curated views, completed in two phases to create a cohesive and immersive landscape experience.
House and garden were conceived as a single, cohesive composition. The design draws on Japanese influences, shaping both the architectural form and the landscape setting. Internally, volumes have been restructured to create generous, double-height spaces, where a restrained material palette reinforces a sense of calm and clarity.
